Why can't I get a color pencil to sharpen??

I use crayola color pencils and I can't get them to sharpen!! We have a hand sharpner on the wall and evertime the led breaks off and I have to try to get it out of the sharpner and when I use a little sharpner the same thing happens, the led always breaks off why??
