Why do old women collect lady figurines?

i was thinking about how many of those china lady figurines my granny has and i was wondering why old ladies in particular collect them? it is because they just like them? or does every old lady have to have a lady figurine ornament? is it a requirement when you turn 60? why do they all have them! is there some psychology behind it?
